Let's Talk Anxiety

Updated: Sep 15, 2023

When the pandemic hit four years ago, it brought out a lot of different emotions and mindsets from people. Introverts who were okay being at home realized they may not be so introvert. There's a difference between being at home and leaving when you want to, and being home and can't leave, because your city is on lockdown. It gave me a chance to really know how anxiety can affect a person. Also, it gave me the opportunity to learn how to be sensitive to family and friends who suffer from it. For anyone really.

Anxiety can be characterized by feelings of fear, worry, or unease. It can manifest differently in everybody, and has negative effects on a person's ability to cope. Anxiety can take place in the mind and have a profound effect on the physical body. It can stand in the way of deep inner peace and contentment, and is definitely linked to a stress response. Episodes can range from subtle to strong.

Some symptoms from mind to body are:

  • Sleep disturbance and insomnia

  • Sweating

  • Increased heart rate

  • Chest pain and heart palpitations

  • Helplessness and despair

  • Danger that is most likely not life threatening

  • Feelings of panic and fear

  • Upset stomach and digestive issues

  • Withdrawal from society, friends/family

There are a few ways that you can help someone with anxiety. Provide validation, but remember a person's anxiety doesn't have to make sense to you. Express concern by asking what you can do to help. I've learned to ask if it's okay to ask if they need help. Some people prefer not to be talked to. Talk to them calmly, or do breathing exercises with them. Know when to seek help. If the anxiety begins to cause problems in you loved one or friends everyday life, then it may be time to seek professional help. When suggesting an initial check-in for mental and emotional health, please let them know a commitment to treatment or keep therapy sessions does not have to be made.
